Artist Statement
I believe that media, in any form, has the potential to impact its viewers’ perceptions of society and the people in it. I enjoy watching TV shows that depicted minorities and women in a positive way: Girlfriends, Insecure, Half and Half and Jane the Virgin. In my youth, I looked to fictional characters as role models because these were my reference points for how people should be in society. I realized as I grew older that younger people don’t have the same representation that I had as a child, and I wanted to change that. I want to be able to shape society’s perceptions. I was first introduced to filmmaking when I was 16 through Scribe Video Center. I realized that if I wanted to change what is shown in the media, then I needed to be that change. I found my passion for filmmaking through producing and screenwriting. Now I am working on creating stories about underrepresented groups, so that young children and teenagers are able to have positive and empowering role models just like I was able to.
